Reports from China claim that phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series are suffering crashes, black screens and random reboots, especially under heavy loads. The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max, Xiaomi 18 Pro series and iQOO 16 are among the models named. Some reports have also suggested a flaw in TSMC's 2nm process, claimed the iPhone 18 Pro is affected, and said MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro devices are unaffected. The iPhone 18 Pro reboot reports are real, but the cause is software. Users began reporting freezes and automatic restarts shortly after the phone launched on September 18. The problem appears to come from an iOS 27 driver issue tied to the new Face ID sensor. When Face ID fails inside an app and the user taps "Retry," a kernel-level panic forces a reboot. Apple acknowledged the issue on September 24 and fixed it in iOS 27.0.1, so it is unrelated to the chip's manufacturing process.
